Teachers, nation-builders

Arpa Karmoker is a teacher at a private elementary school in Chittagong, Bangladesh's second-largest city. She lives in a rented apartment with her husband and mother-in-law. But it is a difficult time. Schools are closed, teachers have limited incomes, they live from day to day. Despite the difficulties, Arpa believes in a better tomorrow. She considers teachers to be the builders of the nation. What does she mean by that?

The coronavirus turned everything upside down

Arpa says: "The covid-19 pandemic turned everything upside down. It has been 10 months since government measures came into force and the schools are closed. The children don't go to school, the classes are empty, I can't teach them. Although I have online lessons through the Zoom application, not all children have the necessary equipment at home. Only a few students attend this course and pay tuition. It's a hard time. It is very difficult to cover our basic needs from such a small income. "

People in Bangladesh are losing their jobs at this difficult time. And getting a new one is almost impossible. There is simply no work and there is still a ban on gathering. People cannot visit each other, families suffer. Even if Arpa wants to find a new job, the measures of the covid-19 pandemic will not allow it. Arpa's husband also has no job. They live on a minimum income, so to speak, "from hand to mouth." No one knows.

She wants children to have responsible and loving citizens

Arpa completed a bachelor's program and enrolled in a master's degree in pedagogy. She says of her profession: “I love being a teacher because teachers are the builders of a nation. Children and parents love them and show them respect and esteem. I teach children who come from different backgrounds. We have Muslims, Hindus, Christians and Buddhists in the class. I enjoy time with them. We have a nice relationship with children and parents. The teaching profession is beautiful, but there is one temptation that I do not like. And that's when the teacher talks a lot. "

With her approach to children and teaching, Arpa strives to make students grow into responsible, tolerant and loving people, great citizens and patriots. In this respect, she is certainly the builder of the nation.

Everyone is looking forward to going back to school

The covid-19 pandemic and emergency measures have been going on in Bangladesh for a long time. Almost all people in society felt its effects. Parents have no job, children have a long time without school, teachers have no one to teach, many suffer. And just at this moment, students would like to return to school desks and regular study life. They lack friends and lockdown negatively affects their minds. They need new stimuli, they need to learn and grow.

Arpa remains optimistic. She hopes that the schools will reopen soon and she will be able to fulfil her mission. Educate children for a successful life.
