SAMS: A safe environment for everyone

“Everyone who lives on this school campus deserves to feel safe,” said Sujon Sangma, headteacher of SAMS boarding school, during a recent training session on safeguarding children and creating a safe environment.

Separate sessions were held for younger pupils, older students and school staff. The aim was to address this important and sensitive topic in a way that was clear and appropriate for each group’s age and role.

A clear, sensitive and respectful approach

Safeguarding children requires care and sensitivity. The trainers talked to the children about their rights, how to recognise inappropriate or unsafe behaviour, how to protect their personal boundaries and who to turn to if they feel unsafe.

The sessions also covered mutual respect and behaving in ways that keep others safe. As well as learning to recognise situations in which they might need help, the children were encouraged to think about how their own behaviour can help create a safe environment for others.

Who to turn to for help

After the sessions, the school leadership introduced students and staff to the members of the school team responsible for safeguarding and maintaining a safe environment.

Children and staff can approach these designated team members if they are worried about their safety, need help or want to raise concerns about inappropriate behaviour.

We thank everyone who has taken on this important responsibility for their willingness to help make SAMS a place where everyone can feel safe.

We also thank you, our donors. Your support helps children in Bangladesh not only attend school, but also grow and learn in a safe environment.
